Security in the home has become a very important consideration among homeowners over the years. It is not as if it was not important to people before, but considering the recent crime rates in certain areas and newer more innovative ways burglars are beginning to utilize, more and more people are becoming more involved in securing guaranteed protection for their homes. Professional locksmith's will tell you that there are things you can do all by yourself to improve the security and functionality of your locks. Take latch door locks for example. What can homeowners do on their own to keep these locks in good working condition? How can one repair a latch door lock if it malfunctions? Here are a few answers to these questions.
Do not forget to tighten the hinges – Sometimes, when the latch does not seem to align properly, the problem may be on the door hinges and not on the latch itself. Sadly, there are some homeowners who keep on repairing and repositioning the latch as they never seem to align properly. Always check the door hinges and make sure they are tight. These can loosen over time and cause misalignment so be sure to check every once in a while.
Adjust the strike plate hole – If after checking the hinges you still notice that there is a recurring misalignment, measure the difference on the strike plate and adjust the hole on by at least 1/8 inch. Remove the strike plate first, and then enlarge the hole gradually using a half-round file. Be careful not make the hole too big though. This might make the lock mechanism loose thereby hindering its purpose.
Try moving the strike plate – There will be times when the latch appears to be on the same level as the strike plate, but in a wrong distance. When this happens, you will need to reposition the strike plate. Use a chisel to adjust the size of the strike plate mortise. Hold the plate and drill new 1/16-inch holes to hold the screws. Put the plate in place and fill the gaps with wood filler. Remove the plate and paint to complete the patch.
