Cutie Pie and LA Frugal Fashionista extraordinaire Marisa is a gal after my own heart.  By hitting her 1/3 life crisis and seeing the movie Julie & Julia, she walked out of the theater feeling like a deflated balloon.   Frustrated yet inspired, she wanted to know what she could do to bring her creativity to life while inspiring others to go for the gusto and step out of their comfort zone creatively.

With absolutely no formal sewing experience other than watching her mama, she has developed a talent not only for sewing, but for recreating vintage garments.  Her mission:  A brand new outfit each day, for $1.00.   Damn.

She purchases the dress for $1.00 at her local vintage joint, goes home and cuts, shapes, pins and tucks to fit and revive the dress into sheer fabulousness.

She not only gets to wear a 'new dress a day', she posts her progress, before and after shots and even gives instructions on how to achieve the same look with garment construction details and sewing tips.   Her blog (www.newdressaday.wordpress.com) has been covered on local radio, TV and pod-casts and TIME magazine.   I was so impressed with her idea that I wanted to let my audience be inspired by her as well.

‘What is that?” you may ask?  So check this out;

What the?

Hows that for super cute with my big fat ankle?

How's that for super cute with my big fat ankle?

Love, love, love these!  Out at the end of the night dying to take your shoes off?  What a great idea!  They have soles on the bottom for a quick walk home, or a quick slip out the door of a strange apartment?  No, I’ve never done that.  But these sure would have come in handy if that had ever happened to me.  And the kicker?  They were super cheap and everywhere to be found in Sin City.  I guess souvenir shower caps and shampoo are a thing of the past in classy joints.

How's this for fabulous?  Woman from India now living in Brooklyn took on the challenge of wearing the same dress for 365 days.  The purpose of this fashion excursion was to raise money for school uniforms and other expenses for children in the slums of India to be able to attend school.  She not only wore the dress for 365 days she raised over 100,000.    Each day she invented  a different look with accessories, shoes, hats, or anything else that she could get her hands on.  The video of every outfit that she wore is on her website www.theuniformproject.com.

I was so inspired by this, I decided to see if I could get an interview with the Uniform Project people.  I ended up talking to ELIZA STARBUCK of Bright Young Things clothing (www.youbrightyoungthings.com).  She is THE designer of this dress that Sheena wore every day last year.  What a thrill it was to talk to her and find out about how the partnership began.  I have an article coming out this Friday in the Greenpoint Gazette about Eliza and her line and what makes her pieces so versatile.  I am so in love with this idea, charity and the dress!  Eliza said I could pay her in installments.  Excellent.

2 dresses = $20.00 Bucks!

2 Dresses = $20 Bucks

Great day at the Salvation Army in Williamsburg, Brooklyn today.  To give you an idea of what kind of place this is, they didn’t even have a dressing room.  When I asked a sales lady where the fitting rooms were, she told me there was some “space” behind the racks; that I could change there.    Okay then, so I got undressed behind the rack hoping no men would come in.  This dress was waiting patiently for me to rescue it.  And yes, it came home with me.  For the low. low price of $10.00.  Yes, it does look a little “Flowers in the Attic-ish” howev, I’m cutting it short (knee length) and wearing it with cowboy boots.   Genius.  Didn’t want to pay for dry cleaning so I washed and hung to dry myself.  Super Genius.

Look at THIS dress.  This was brand new with the tags for $10.00.  Now, I couldn’t get it over my hips howev slid on beautifully over my head. Fits PERFECT!   No biggie.  For 10 bucks?  I’ll take it.  A great dress for work and super cute with cowboy boots as well.  Will transition well into fall.

Stopped by your Salvation Army lately?

2 for 1 Havaianas
by dressrecycler

I have totally inspired my sidekick to search for great bargains.  She informed me today that she got us 2 for 1 Havaianas…..how exciting when they retail for $24.00 per pair!

It’s tough spending money on flip flops considering the short life expectancy they have.  There are expensive and cheap ones; just like most shoes you see in the stores at this time of year.  The reason Havaianas are great is because they don’t indent easily and are thicker at the heel.  If you’re gonna live in flip flops this summer like I do, then this is a great buy that will last you until next season.

My 1/2 price Havaianas

They even have charms that you can add that we’re getting this weekend.  Love it!  More pics to come.

Venus's Got Game

So Venus Williams got some negative press from the black lacy outfit that she wore on the court at the French Open today.  The tennis outfit was made from black lace (transparent except on the bust) with red trim and a flirty ruffle on her short skirt.

It was called "racy" and stated that if she didn't win the Open that "perhaps she can find some work at the famous Parisian Moulin Rouge."   Whatever.  Not only did she win the French Open, she rocked that dress up an down the court as I hoped she would, me wishing she was mentally telling all the reporters where they can go.

I don't care if she wants to wear a cocktail dress and 5 inch heels on the court;  She'll still kill it and send her competitor running home to Mama. From the reaction this tennis outfit received, you would have thought she forgot to put the shorts on underneath.   But hey, she fashionably kicked it up a notch and to me, that's more than admirable.

my new bikini

So today while I was in Target I decided to browse the string bikinis.  Now little did I not realize that I would be subjecting myself to self-destructive behavior.

Here's the thing:  Target has millions of string bikinis that I have long since outgrown.  However, little did I know that they have the "next step" of mix and match bikini tops and bottoms with fuller cuts and more style options for the customer who's still hot enough to wear a two-piece, but needs more support that a string can offer.

As I picked up the bikini bottom with a skirt ruffle I asked myself, "Is this what my life has come to?"  Before I could get the words out I looked in the horrid dressing room mirror under the disgracing "wal-mart-esque" lighting.  From that moment on, my bikini life as I knew it took a victorious turn.

That bikini bottom that I thought was so "old lady" turned out to be my new best friend.  Total cost:  $37.50.   I am happy to report that I totally surpassed my potential cuteness and will be struttin' around the beach WITHOUT shorts this year.  Yay me!

Flea Market Splurge

Today was the day I decided was the beginning of the flea market season.  So in my winter coat, hat and gloves I schlepped to the flea market and made a brand new friend.  A friend that gave me a blogworthy, fantastic deal.

Brand new button down Short sleeve silver/gray dress
Brand new button down Short sleeve silver/gray dress $10.00

I love this dress so much and the fabric is a very good quality.  Because the original tags were still attached, I discovered the original retail price was $85.00.  Yay!

Newport News $10.00 velour jacket
Newport News $10.00 velour jacket

This jacked didn't have the original tags attached.  However, it was flawless and in near mint condition.   I told her to go ahead and throw that in too.

What a steal!  So that's $20.00 spent and I got two pieces that I can merge into my everchanging wardrobe that won't go out of style.  I can wear the dress during multiple seasons throughout the year-no question.  I can dress is up or down.

The jacket will look great as a layering piece going into fall this year and will be rockin' once I put a giant rhinestone pin on the collar.

Deciding that was all the money I could spend today I did pop on over to the Goodwill store and sent out good shoe karma to anyone who wears a size 8 1/2 shoe......see below for the reason why:

Moschino strappy 4 inch heels w/ roses -$20.00
Moschino strappy 4 inch heels w/ roses -$20.00
$20.00 Moschino shoes-2 sizes too big....Can you believe it???  These were in excellent condition.  I hope they go to a good home as I will be praying for them tonight.
Been by the Goodwill in your town lately? Hit me up for future tips and tricks on buying vintage and 2nd hand clothing.  You too will learn how to spot great bargains in a flash like me!
