"Dr. Carson is a distinguished national leader who overcame his troubled youth in the inner city of Detroit to become a renowned neurosurgeon who served as the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland," Trump's transition team said in a statement announcing the nomination. Carson, who like Trump has never held public office and has no government experience, recently said he was not interested in serving in Trump's administration because he lacked experience in the federal government.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe gestures during a press conference in Buenos Aires, ArgentinaBy Kiyoshi Takenaka TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Monday he will visit Pearl Harbor this month with U.S. President Barack Obama "to console the souls" of victims of Japan's surprise attack on U.S. forces there 75 years ago. Abe, who will be the first serving Japanese prime minister to visit the naval base in Hawaii, said he wanted to demonstrate resolve to end the horror of war. This year, Obama become the first serving U.S. president to visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima, which the United States attacked with an atomic bomb in 1945.

By Humphrey Malalo and Thomas Mukoya NAIROBI (Reuters) - Doctors working in Kenyan state hospitals went on strike on Monday to demand fulfilment of a 2013 agreement between their union and the government that would raise their pay and improve working conditions, a senior union official said. Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) who had marched to the health ministry headquarters in the capital, Reuters witnesses said. The medics, wearing white gowns and surgical caps, then marched on to the Finance Ministry headquarters.
