Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said it would be wrong for him or any of his colleagues to quit if critics of the central bank's stance in the European Union referendum come to power following Prime Minister David Cameron's decision to resign. Before Britain voted to leave the EU last week, Carney said this would bring short-term market turmoil and negative medium-term economic consequences, drawing criticism from the subsequently victorious Vote Leave campaign, which questioned his motivation. Three Conservative anti-EU campaigners - Michael Gove, Liam Fox and Andrea Leadsom - are among the five candidates vying to succeed Cameron in a race that will conclude in September.

Citing the humanitarian crisis triggered by Syria's brutal civil war, President Barack Obama had called for a dramatic increase in the number of Syrian refugees resettled in America in fiscal year 2016. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson however said Washington had "added security checks to the process where they are warranted" and overcome early hurdles.

A ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the deadliest of the World War I, on June 30, 2016 in Albert, northern FranceBritain's Prince William and his wife Kate were on Thursday set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the deadliest battle in British history in which 20,000 men died on the first day of combat alone. The royal couple, accompanied by William's brother Prince Harry, were due to attend a night vigil at the Thiepval Memorial in northern France to honour the 1.2 million troops of different nationalities who were killed, injured or listed as missing in the World War I battle. Guests from Commonwealth countries and members of the public will hold a vigil overnight until 7:30 am (0530 GMT), the exact time that tens of thousands of troops clambered out of the trenches to be mown down by German guns.
