The suspect, who the police have not yet identified by name, remains at large.
The robbery occurred around 11:40 a.m. at the bank at 64-01 Grand Avenue. Detective John Webber, of the 104th Precinct, said the robber, a black male wearing a dark jacket and hat, entered the bank with a firearm drawn and demanded money from the bank vault.
The bank employees on duty did not have access to the vault, said Webber, and instead offered the cash on hand behind the counter.
After collecting approximately $11,000 in U.S. currency, the robber fled the bank.
Webber said the police responded by issuing a Level One mobilization call, which brought the NYPD Task Force, police aviation, and 104th Precinct officers to the crime scene.
The joint forces carried out a grid search of the area but failed to apprehend the suspect, Webber said. The heist is now under joint investigation by the Major Case Robbery Task Force and the 104th's detective unit.
"Sometimes it takes time with these bank robberies. It can take a while to get them," Webber said. "We'll go with all the leads we can get.”
