Christina Cruz earned her sixth-straight Golden Gloves championship last Thursday at Madison Square Garden, defeating Florina Novac in the 112-pound division after the fight was stopped in the second round.

Her victory broke a tournament record set by New York amateur boxing legend Mark Breland.

In other finals action, which wrapped up on Friday, Joe Schiraldo beat Dequan Burgos to win his first Golden Gloves title.

Former champions Juan Roman and Michael Stoute couldn’t separate themselves for two rounds, but Roman seized control in the third to take his second Gloves title.

After several tries, Vassiliy Zherebnenko finally won a title with a 4-1 victory over Bryant Cruz.

And Joshua Marte worked his way to a 3-2 win over fellow heavyweight Timothy Dougherty.

I would like to meet Christina Cruz and Florina Novac in person someday.
