Dr. Albert Yoo, a periodontist and Long Island City resident, was recently selected to be part of Stony Brook University’s “40 under 40” Alumni Awards.

Yoo was born in Queens and raised on Long Island. He returned to his native borough to open up his own dental practice in Bayside, and now lives next to the Pulaski Bridge in Long Island City.

“I was in shock to hear that I was nominated and even more surprised to learn that I would be a recipient,” Yoo said. “It’s an honor and humbling award.”

Yoo described his work as “treating gum and bone loss around teeth” and placing “dental implants to help restore missing teeth.” He was raised by two physicians, which he said played a role in his career choice in healthcare.

He said one of his next goals is to further patient education and high quality periodontal and implant care at his practice, which is only four years old. Yoo added that he also wants to keep giving back to the community and mentor the next generation of dentists.

In addition to his dental practice, Yoo also leads dental missions to Buff Bay in Jamaica.

“It all started over coffee one day in 2009, where my mother suggested I join her and the team as a dentist to Buff Bay,” Yoo said. “From there it just grew.”

He now goes on the missions with other dentist friends, family and dental students from Stony Brook University. They treat up to 300 patients there, with services including extractions, cleanings, fillings and root canals.

“The people are always gracious and eagerly await for our team to come back each year,” Yoo said.
