Alyson Chiaramonte

St. Joseph’s College Softball

For the second time in as many weeks, a blue-and-gold wearing Bear pitched a perfect game. This time, the Bear was from St. Joseph’s College.

Freshman Alyson Chiaramonte was dominant against Sarah Lawrence College, putting 0’s up across the board for five innings as the Lady Bears won in a romp 10-0.  The perfect game was the first in the history of the Division III school, and the sixth no hitter.

Chiaramonte struck out seven of the 15 batters she faced in improving to 6-3 on the season with an ERA of 2.15.

For Chiaramonte, the Staten Island Native ‘s performance surprised even her. “I never thought I’d throw a perfect game in college.” She said, nothing that she threw perfect games “all the time” while attending Moore Catholic High School.

Chiaramonte said she didn’t feel anything special in warm up’s. “It [the perfect game] came out of nowhere.”

As if her stellar pitching performance wasn’t enough, Chiaramonte, who had a 9-game hitting streak snapped in the previous game, was spectacular in the batter’s box as well, going 3-4 with 5 RBI, two runs, and a home run.

And just for kicks, she drove home the winning runs in the first inning, hitting a two-run single with the bases loaded in the first inning.

Normally, when teammates realize that their pitcher is perfect, they try to keep the pitcher from becoming aware. But not the Bears. “They told me the whole game that I was throwing a perfect game,” Chiaramonte said. “And I told them to shut up and not jinx it.”

Well, we certainly hope that we haven’t jinxed Alyson, but we just had to make everyone else aware of her incredible performance. Congratulations to this week’s Athlete of the Week: Alyson Chiaramonte.
