St. Joseph’s College Softball

To the victors go the accolades, as we like to say here at the Queens Ledger/Brooklyn Star sports desk. And so in the aftermath of St. Joseph’s College’s HVWAC championship, the star of the tournament is this week’s Athlete of the Week: Pitcher Lisa Scheer.

While teammate Allyson Chiarmonte gained press in this space for throwing a perfect game earlier in the season, Scheer has been an equally important member of the Lady Bears.

Scheer, a freshman from Queens and a graduate of the Mary Louis Academy has ranks second on the team with a .344 batting average and 23 RBI. One of only two players to start all 34 games, Scheer has also been an ace for the Bears, posting a 13-4 record to go with a 2.27 ERA and 111 strikeouts.

Scheer was spectacular in the HVWAC title game, pitching eight innings of one-run ball as well as coming up with the championship-winning walk-off hit in the 9th. Scheers efforts won her the HVWAC tournament MVP award, and this week’s Athlete of the Week. Congratulations to Queens’ newest champion: Lisa Scheer.
