This space is usually reserved for the weekly athletic accomplishments of neighborhood athletes who shine in team sports.
However, since it’s such a great accomplishment to not only complete the grueling 26.2-mile course, but to excel while doing so, it’s appropriate to reserve this particular week for the many local marathoners who performed exceptionally well despite some chilly and at times, blustery conditions that included strong head winds, on Sunday, across New York City’s five boroughs.
Though many from the surrounding areas deserve praise, Astoria’s Katarina Janosikova is our Athlete Of The Week after finishing with the best time among female New York Road Runner members. Janosikova’s time of 2:42:57 was good enough to place her 18th overall in this year’s edition of the ING New York City Marathon.
Meanwhile, just two spots behind Janosikova, at 20th overall, was Brooklyn’s Victoria Ganushina, who finished 20th overall, with a time of 2:43:55.
Among the men, Brooklyn’s Edvard Gapak, placed 23rd overall, in 2:22:37, while Phillip Sneller, of Queens, finished in 2:31:15, good for 56th place, overall.
