Can you imagine what it would be like to watch Kobe Bryant and LeBron James face off in a playoff game? CHSAA fans saw a similar matchup last week when Christ the King and Molloy faced off. The real stars of the show were Molloy guard Russell Smith and Christ the King forward Sean Johnson. These rising stars put on a show, as Johnson scored 33 points, and yet was almost overshadowed by Smith’s 47 points. The entire game was a display of jumpers, runners, layups, three’s and free throws.
In the end, Johnson was the big winner. His Christ the King team held off the Stanners, 87-85, and Johnson was named B/Q Most Valuable Player, a fact that surprised even him.
“I didn’t think I would get it,” Johnson said, praising his opponent. “Russ has been putting up crazy numbers.”
In the end, everyone who packed that gym in Middle Village was the big winner. Here’s hoping we see these two face off on college and pro courts in the future.
