Folks in Kew Gardens packed Austin's Steak & Ale House on Friday, Sept. 21, to help the neighborhood institution celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Formerly known as Old Baileys Bar, David Magic said he has been coming to the restaurant for many years.

“It's the best place in the area for food and drink,” he said, being particularly fond of the restaurant's steaks.

Emily Mintz and Andre Dejonge said they learned of the anniversary when they passed by the restaurant, located at 82-70 Austin St., and saw the archway of balloons outside its entrance.

“We had to stop in to see what was going on,” said Mintz, who said they were both looking for something fun to do after getting out of work. “The environment looked so festive.”

Sitting outside, Dejonge also added that this was one of the few restaurants in the area with an outdoor patio.

Hostess Riley Cook said the event's $20 special included unlimited draft, bottle beer and cocktails. There was also a complimentary barbecue and buffet with live music provided by DJ Javier and a free T-shirt giveaway at 7 p.m.

Owners of Austin's Steak & Ale House Mark Boccia and John Ryan said they were excited to see the restaurant evolve since it's opening.

“We've really come a long way, and we're looking forward to the future,” Boccia said.
