Every year I look forward to the warmth of our short summer months. Yes, our sunny summer is fleeting, so we should enjoy every day while we can.

Last week we took our own advice and enjoyed a beautiful day by driving out to Rockaway Beach. It was an amazing trip, for the last time we were there was right after Sandy. We were so happy to see Howard Beach, Beach Channel, Hamilton Beach and the Rockaways recovering so well.

Although it will be a long, long time until they return to what they were, especially in the beautiful community of Breezy Point. But when you remember and realize the devastation of Sandy you know that progress has been made. All of our good thoughts go out to these tenacious residents that are fighting for their homes and bringing this area back.

When we returned to Woodhaven, we had dinner at one of our local restaurants on our Woodhaven Business Improvement District (WBID). Your WBID from Dexter Court to 100th Street on Jamaica Avenue pays for all of these services. They are sanitation and graffiti removal. Your Woodhaven Business Improvement District cleans the sidewalks and streets seven days a week, removes the graffiti-vandalism (98 percent vandalism free).

We also engage security, patrolling our avenue because of the horrific incident of last week. There is marketing and promotion, also Christmas promotions and decorations all along our 25 blocks of our avenue. So we encourage you to shop locally on our “Everything” Jamaica Avenue WBID where we are “Taking Care of Bidness.”

Our businesses need you as their customer, the economy is not good as you know, so please shop locally. The prices are right, and the stores and Businesses care about Woodhaven, for they are willing to pay for all of the services on our WBID for you and your families.

The WBID is the only BID in Community Board 9 and the only BID outside of the three in Jamaica in Southwest Queens. Next week some of the history of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, which offers graffiti vandalism removal and assistance to all businesses, stores and apartment buildings off Jamaica Avenue. Also our Forest Parkway Plaza.

Don’t forget to water our street trees, and please leave your porch lights on. You can call our office at (718) 805-0202, our website is www.woodhavenbid.com, watch for our Facebook page.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. when your WBID will sponsor (I hate to say it) back to school sales days with live music, face painters and free giveaways including American Flags, all along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue. All courtesy of your store and business owners that care enough to contribute to the WBID that make these activities possible. Shop while you enjoy the music, the clowns, and free face painting.

Finally all of our prayers and thoughts go out to Nastasha Martinez and her family. May she heal physically and they all heal emotionally from this horrific experience.

Fly our American flags proudly above all others and wear your American flag lapel pins. May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces and disabled veterans and may God bless our America.
