Commissioner Sal Cassano is joined by members of New York's Bravest and the New York Mets for a photo before the firefighters took batting practice at Citi Field in preparation for their big showdown with the Police Department on August 5 at MCU Park in Coney Island.

A team of firefighters and Cassano took on New York's Finest and Commissioner Ray Kelly in an annual baseball game. The NYPD ended up beating the Fire Department 3-0 in the 12th annual meeting. The departments play every year to raise money for charities, including the New York Fire and Police Widow’s and Children’s Benefit Fund.

The night before at Citi Field, Cassano joined some of the Fire Department's team for a round of batting practice. The commissioner started off slowly, bunting before he took full swings in an attempt to regain the stroke he honed playing sandlot baseball on Staten Island as a youth.

In February, Cassano invited members of the New York Mets to the Fire Department Academy on Randall's Island for some instruction on how to fight a fire. The players were fitted with firefighting gear and proceeded to go into a simulated inferno to put out a blaze.
