The Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens held its holiday basketball tournament in its Long Island City gym from Friday, January 6, through Sunday, January 8. Twenty teams competed in the tournament in Sub-Novice (under eight years old), Pee Wee, (nine years old), and Novice (10 years old) divisions.

Parents and supporters packed the gym while coaches yelled across the court, directing players to cover strong opponents. Teams from St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, took the championship on Sunday in all three categories.

"There was tremendous parent support," said Athletic Director Carol O'Connell.

As for the overall experience, she said, "I think the kids had a great time and that's really all we were interested in."

The Variety Boys and Girls Club is located at 21-12 30th Road in Long Island City. For more information, visit vbgcq.org.
