You could call it Iron Chef Brooklyn.

For as much as we can tell, Councilman Brad Lander and State Senator Daniel Squadron, whose districts overlap in Brooklyn, are on friendly working terms when it comes to passing bills, criticizing government bureaucracy, and engaging in all other matters of politics.

But when it comes to making the best burger, there is no love lost between these two!

A few weeks back, Squadron and Lander squared off in a burger battle worthy of Top Chef at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket at the corner of Smith and Carroll streets.

Dubbed the Better Burger Challenge, each pol was assisted by sous chefs – high schoolers from the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies – as they tried to best each other’s meat patty. Shoppers at the greenmarket got to participate in the taste test and vote for their favorite burger.

So who’s cuisine in the end reigned supreme?

Well, apparently Squadron knows his way around a hamburger. In the end, his burger was tops among voters, but it was close as he only beat Lander by seven votes.

His burger booty? The coveted Golden Spatula Award.
