There’s no business like snow business.
When Senator McCain dramatically announced to the voting public, that he was suspending his campaign race as well as his presence at the scheduled Presidential debate in order to fly off to DC to save our country from economic collapse and that he would not return until a resolution was reached, it successfully impressed all of his supporters. Well for better or worse, a resolution was finally reached long after his return to the campaign and after his presence at the scheduled Presidential debate. And now for better or for worse, his race goes on.
Senator McCain’s gesture was eerily reminiscent of yet another like performance. It was our Commander in Chief dressed as a fighter pilot, suspending his daily duties at the white house in order to fly off for a day to the aircraft carrier Lincoln to announce the end of fighting in Iraq. Hardly for better but certainly for worse, the Iraq war still goes on.
These Mighty Mouse-like “flying off” symbolic gestures, although colorful, seem to be nothing more than gimmicks to divert the audience (which is the American public) from the real issue at hand, whether it is a flailing campaign or a failing war. Politics seem to be the perfect stage for theatrics. And the tricks go on.
