Can't 'stand' it!

Dear Editor:

Three fruit and vegetable stands ten feet long have opened up on one block on 82nd Street from 37th to Roosevelt avenues in Jackson Heights this summer.

We feel 82nd Street is our Fifth Avenue. It's a disgrace, it's disgusting, it's dirty and they are open 24 hours. Everyone we ask or complain to says they got a permit from City Hall.

Now, half a block away is a fruit store that opened six months ago and is paying $11,000 in rent, and he can't compete with the fruit stands. He'll be going out of business soon.

The fruit stands also have a big white delivery truck with black graffiti all over it. It's parked on the avenue for 24 hours.

Why do these fruit stands have permits?
