Can't a girl just hold a little ol' fundraiser?

Looks like Speaker Christine Quinn is having a hard time flying under the radar these days. At a January 13th fundraising event in Soho, she attracted a group of protesters with a number of grievances to air.

According to an email sent to us by one of the organizers, some people were there “to speak out against her betrayals before, during and after the closure of St. Vincent's Hospital; some were there to protest the way she uses discretionary funds to virtually strip the City Council of the democratic process; some were there to call attention to her record of campaign and budget corruption; and some were there to highlight her appalling human rights and animal protection voting records.”

That's quite a laundry list of concerns the protesters have with Quinn, whose name has been bandied about in a possible mayoral run after the third term she voted to give herself and the mayor expires. Looks like she is going to have some critics following her around until then, as the email promises to hound Quinn on the campaign trail.

The reaction on the street was apparently mixed, as some people (including guests at the fundraiser) merely took the handouts and read the posters, while some actually thanked the group, according to the organizers. There was also this curious line in the email:

“And two or three criticized us for unspecified reasons. One lesbian couple who happened to be driving by pulled over and asked, 'Why are you protesting against Christine Quinn? She's gay.'”

Oh yes, the email we received also noted that the protesters themselves were both gay and straight. Not sure why they felt the need to mention that factoid, we here at Pol Position have always known that displeasure with our elected officials doesn't care about your sexual orientation.
