In Holland, people regularly use stroop to sweeten their meals. A common household product, stroop is a traditional Dutch jam-like condiment most commonly made from apples. But to many New Yorkers, it is a foreign treat. Enter Carina Hueber, founder and director of Dutch Artisans import company, who was raised on apple stroop and still consumes it every day, confessing that it's “a bit addictive.” “Before I would bring back containers of stroop from Holland, but it would not sustain me throughout the year” said Hueber, who lives in Park Slope. “Once my son was born and I saw how much he loved it, I really wanted the apple stroop to be available for everyone. Why not bring it to New York for everyone else?” Hueber works with a family-owned business in the Netherlands that has produced apple stroop for over 50 years. Hueber imports two types of apple stroop. The original flavor has just apples, and then the more tart flavor is a mix of apples, peptin and beets. Hueber raves that these delicious condiments are great with many dishes. “Apple stroop is a treat that you don’t have to feel guilty about,” she said. “It’s a great source of iron with no artificial preservatives. I like to use the stroop with sauces, stew, cheeses, yogurt and dessert.”
