Some 2,800 “large canopy” trees were lost in the storm, according to Department of Parks and Recreation forester Joe Kocal, who gave an update on the replanting effort at last week’s Community Board Five meeting.
CB5 alone lost 280 big trees, he said. Many of them were in Middle Village, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods, where trees smashed into houses, parked cars and damaged power lines.
Approximately 60 trees in the district were replanted immediately following the storm, Kocal said, though he didn’t specify where. Approximately 700 have been replanted across the borough in the past half-year.
“We’re going to be [replanting] as many as we can, as quickly as we can,” he said, though CB5 is not at the top of the priority list. “We’re focused on CB7 right now, but CB5 is right behind,” Kocal said.
