Sunday marked the second anniversary of “Smile on Maspeth Day,” a children’s carnival event sponsored by Maspeth Federal Savings and Loan that was held in the bank’s parking lot at 56-18 69th Street.

Kids of all ages and their families were treated to an afternoon of free food, carnival games, prizes, face painting, live entertainment, and inflatable rides.

“Our main objective is just to have everyone come out and enjoy a nice day,” said David Daraio, assistant vice president of Maspeth Federal.

And come they did. Last year’s Smile on Maspeth Day drew 3,500 people despite cloudy weather, and this year’s event - set to go rain or shine, but fortunately it was a warm and sunny day – attracted an estimated 4,000 visitors.

A wooden chest sat on the center of the “Pirates’ Treasure” table. Children rummaged through an assortment of keys and picked one with which they tried to open the chest. Though all participants received smaller prizes, successful kids had the opportunity to win money that would be credited toward a Young Savers Club account at Maspeth Federal Savings Bank.

“It’s a great way to teach kids how to save,” said Daraio. “It’s good to start young and give them a head start.”

Ayoka Solomon, a Ridgewood resident, often received Holiday Club accounts as presents from her mom. Now a mother herself, she is trying to teach her son Elijah about the value of money before he has even started school.

“I think it’s a good thing because he’ll be two in October and he already has two bank accounts,” said Solomon.

Ken Rudzewick, president of Maspeth Federal Savings Bank, said he hopes the popular event will become an annual one. He emphasized that families always have a blast, and best of all it doesn’t cost them a penny.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community,” said Rudzewick. “We thought in these economic hard times we would have a ‘Smile on Maspeth Day,’ and look how everyone has a smile on this beautiful day.”
