Run D.M.C. was founded in the early 1980's by Joseph "DJ Run" Simmons, Darryl "D.M.C" McDaniels, and the late Jason "Jam Master J" Mizell. The legendary group is considered to be one of the most influential in rap music history and has been crowned "Greatest Hip Hop Group of All-Time" by MTV.com.
Their seven albums and numerous hit singles paved the way for rap music to become the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. Run D.M.C is also credited for immortalizing Hollis as one of the birthplaces of hip-hop.
"Given their historic accomplishments, Run D.M.C. is a tremendous source of pride for the Hollis community I represent," stated Council Member Comrie, who chose the 205th Street location because it is close to the Hollis Hip Hop Museum (203rd St and Hollis Avenue) and is also the site of a famous mural dedicated to the late Jam Master J. Plans for an official street renaming ceremony are scheduled for later this summer.
