“I was sort of joking with friends after I learned we secured the rights to do the show hat I’ve been wanting to do this since college,” she said. “I’ve been waiting to work on this show for 15 years.”
Bondarin says she fell in love with the musical, which follows a downtrodden Broadway composer over a 20-year span moving backwards from 1976 to 1957, since she worked on a production of it backstage during college.
“It was one of those seminal experiences where you’re really taken in by the theater,” she said. “Something I love about the show is because the end is the beginning, as audience members we’re taken in by that fresh feeling of optimism, while also knowing that things didn’t go as planned. It leaves you with this beautiful sense of hope.”
This will be the first musical Bondarin will direct for the company, after taking the helm as artistic director last November.
“I love it,” she said. “APAC is in such a special part of New York City and of Queens. I met APAC as an audience member, coming to see shows, so I really pride myself that I was first an audience member really excited about the work they were doing.”
Merrily We Roll Along will begin on Thursday, April 30, and run until Saturday, May 23. Tickets are $18.
