On November 17, players and coaches from around the catholic league gathered in the Christ the King gymnasium for the girl’s basketball media day. The event, put together by Christ the King girl’s basketball coach Bob Mackey, was another attempt to give girl’s basketball the attention it deserves.
The event, held just minutes after a Christ the King practice, provided a dramatic shift in mood. During the practice, Mackey repeatedly stopped play and chided his players. Afterwards, players and coaches shrugged it off. “That’s how it always is,” Mackey said, regarding his practices. His players agreed.
While the teams are usually enemies on the court, for one night they were in agreement over the development of their sports and their league. “I think girl’s basketball is what boy’s basketball used to be,” said Molloy coach Tom Catalanatto. Added St. Francis Prep senior Aliya Donn: “All I hear about is how girl’s basketball is boring, but hopefully this [media day] helps.”
