A recent edition of your newspaper (Dec 11, 2008) included an Eyesore of the Week item that featured graffiti on a Post Office drop box an Nassaus Ave in Greenpoint. The caption writer said the graffiti, which appeared to include several tags and pieces by different artists, looked “like it was used as a bunker in a glam-rock paintball fight” and expressed the wish that the mailbox be cleaned soon.
While the photograph was cropped so the bottom of the post box couldn’t be seen, I want to point out that the bottom piece-of a cartoonish, toothy man, is actually quite pleasant and skilled. I don’t know who the artist is, but I’ve seen his or her work elsewhere in the are and have come to enjoy it, especially that piece on Nassau Ave, which I walk past daily.
I agree that the top tags, at least one of which looks like it had been tagged over already, as unsightly and unfortunate, and should be removed. However, not all graffiti is created equal, and we should recognize and appreciate good urban art where we can find it. I love that cartoonish toothy man and wish him all the best.
