After dropping the first three matches, the FDNY team bounced back, earning its unprecedented fifth straight victory.
The FDNY Boxing team donated proceeds earned from the event to the organization Building Homes for Heroes, to build a home for United States Marine Corps First Lieutenant James Byler of Huntington, NY.
Lt. Byler lost both legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. The team hopes to raise enough money to pay for major home renovations to meet Lt. Byler's needs.
The FDNY boxing team competes in several amateur boxing matches each year, including last summer's World Police and Fire Games in New York City. In the past several years, the FDNY Bravest Boxing team has donated over $50,000 to military related charities.
