As a constituent of Councilman Rory Lancman, I was shocked by his comments during a meeting held by the Kew Gardens Hills Civic Association over the future of Rikers Island.
During a heated argument with Queens County Executive Assistant D.A. James Quinn over
a proposed new jail at the site of a Queens detention center closed in 2002, Lancman claimed the new facility will merely replace what's already there.
But that's not true. According to plans released by the mayor's office, the new jail will be four times the size of the old one, house three times as many inmates, and include a maternity ward and infirmary, plus 479 parking spaces for staff.
If he plans to run for Queens D.A., as some news reports have noted, he won't get many votes from Kew Gardens Hills residents.
