Coucilwoman Julissa Ferreras' op-ed on Walmart displays a level of ignorance that only a New York City Council member can descend to.
The councilwoman lists a string of accusations against Walmart, but she does not say why Walmart has been a success for so long throughout the country: it sells good products at reasonable prices to low and moderate income consumers who can't afford more expensive retailers or overpriced mom and pop stores.
She also attacks Walmart for being a hell on earth to work in. If that's the case, why do so many people still work there? The average Walmart employee is low-skilled, and the alternative for such an employee is not a high-paid job in technology or construction, it is unemployment.
Councilwoman Ferrera is, like many of her colleagues on the council, a creature of the big unions, and totally uncaring as to the plight of her constituents. She talks a good game, but by limiting their choices as to shopping and employment does them a grave disservice, and no doubt will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
