GOP treatment of soldier a disgrace

Dear Editor:

The GOP is rabidly rearing it's ugly head again, all under the guise of preserving the past. Well, at least the past as they see it.

The audience at the Republican presidential debate in Orlando booed a gay soldier after he asked candidate Rick Santorum a question. Santorum stated that he would reinstate Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

For decades gay men and women have been fighting side by side with heterosexual men and women, placing themselves in harm's way in order to preserve and protect our American ideals. But what amazes me most is that not one debater spoke up to defend this soldier.

Since the Tea Party surfaced, it has done nothing in congress but spread it's agenda of fear and hate. If a man and woman are carrying a rifle, putting themselves in harm's way in order to protect me from terrorists and preserve everything this great country stands for, I really don't care what you are. They are all heroes. They deserve our respect, not boos.

Sincerely,

Charles Merendino
