Grand ol' days

Dear Editor,

There is even more to the recent passing of former councilman Thomas Ognibene, whose death comes just weeks after the passing of another former councilman, Alfonse Stabile.

During the 1990s, under Republican Mayor Rudy Guiliani, the GOP elected Tom Olgibene, Mike Abel and Alfonse Stabile of Queens, along with Charles Millard and Andrew Eristoff of Manhattan, Marten Golden of Brooklyn, and Fred Cerillo of Staten Island.

This resulted in their caucus growing to a record seven members. They were able to work with Democratic Speaker Peter Vallone, Sr. who has many more moderate members to form a working bipartisan majority coalition.

Flash forward to the 2013 general election results. The new City Council class of 2013 is down to three Republicans: Staten Island's Vincent Ignizi and Steven Matteo and Eric Ulrich from Queens.

Both Olgibene and Stabile were part of a golden age of Republicans in the City Council which will never be seen again.

Sincerely,

Larry Penner

Great Neck
