Issac Grant’s two big buckets late in the second half capped an exemplary performance, as the Queens College men’s basketball team fought off LIU Post for a 69-66 upset win on Saturday at Fitzgerald Gymnasium in Flushing.

Tyrone Hall scored the first five points for Queens (7-14, 5-9 ECC), as the Knights opened up a 7-2 lead in the first four minutes of play. Keenan Gorski knocked down a three-pointer with 15:21 to play in the half that gave QC a 10-6 lead and Tyrese Crosdale followed with another three-ball to give QC its largest lead of the half at 13-6.

LIU Post (9-14, 7-6 ECC) was quick to come back as Hunter Powell came off the bench to begin an assault on the score-sheet. Powell finished the half with 12 points on a 6-for-6 shooting performance from the field and his first basket was the catalyst for the Pioneers to tie the score at 15 with nine minutes played in the half.

Queens jumped back in front and held a 26-19 lead following a Grant three-point play with 6:39 remaining in the first half. The pendulum swung back in favor of the visitors, as LIU Post grabbed its first lead at 29-28 when Aary Bibens knocked down a jumper with under four minutes to play.

A jumper by Powell gave the Pioneers a 33-31 lead, but Hall and Grant ended the half with four points as Queens went into the locker room up by a 35-33 score.

In the second half, Dwayne Henry hit a big three-pointer that brought the Knights’ to a 51-44 lead with eleven minutes remaining in regulation, but the Pioneers continued to find their way back into the contest. Jared Rivers scored on a trifecta as LIU Post came within a point with less than eight minutes left in the game.

The visitors ended up taking a one-point lead after Austin Kennedy hit a three with exactly seven minutes to go. With under five minutes remaining in regulation, Grant hit consecutive jumpers to give Queens a 63-61 lead that the Knights would not relinquish.

Grant led QC with 17 points on 70 percent (7-10) shooting with five rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Green and Hall added 13 and 11, respectively.

Rivers led LIU Post with close to a triple-double (20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists) while McLeggan and Powell added 15 and 12 for the Pioneers.

Queens will travel to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday for an 8 p.m. showdown.
