Greenpoint Y teaches children lessons in healthy living

It was Healthy Kids Day last weekend at the Greenpoint YMCA.

Children from around the neighborhood, some who are already active YMCA members and others who just wanted to join in on the fun, took part in the many activities aimed toward healthy living.

A friendly game of flag football, curricula on correcting slouchy posture with family yoga classes and programs like the Y’s new Capoeira martial arts and dance class got things started, as the YMCA celebrated their national initiative to spread health and fitness awareness.

“In the summer, the kids will be out of school, so there might not be structured physical fitness, so this is getting them to stay active,” said Tatiana Terzouli, fund development and communications director for the Greenpoint YMCA, located at 99 Meserole St. “Even though they think of this as play, they’re really learning about physical activity.”

As children were entertained with clowns, face painting and magic shows, instructors also snuck in some lessons on healthy living.

“This program is showing them ways to get active at home because they can do yoga or hula-hoop or play football,” Terzouli said. “We also want them to know that eating healthy is important.”

While Tracy Bozentka’s four-year-old son Raymond is already a member of the Early Childhood Program at the Greenpoint YMCA, she plans on keeping him enrolled in the summer to stay active throughout the year.

“Just seeing what they’re offering today makes me very happy, because he’s one of those children who needs to be guided and have instruction in a fun way,” Bozentka said. “I think what they’re doing with offering yoga and capoeira, I think it will be a brilliant and enriching program for him.”
