Has the fallout begun?

A candidate in the crowded Democratic Primary to replace Grace Meng in the Assembly recently stopped by our offices and told us something interesting.

The candidate said that it was getting harder and harder to solicit campaign donations from people in the Chinese community, not because that demographic isn’t politically motivated, but rather because they are worried that shortly after they give, a federal investigator is going to come knocking at their door.

This is no doubt a direct result of the John Liu fundraising allegations, where people thought they were helping a candidate, only to potentially find themselves at the center of a scandal.

It will be interesting to see if candidates can win back that trust in the future.
