They planted 12 new elm trees, and added two extra for good measure. (Take that, tree robber, whoever you are. Police have yet to find the culprit, despite a $2,500 reward).
Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski teamed up with Middle Village residents from a local civic organization and high school students on November 28 to replant the trees, which were donated by Ed Dart, of Long Island’s Dart’s Tree Farms.
Shovels in hand, volunteers piled dirt around the saplings, positioned beforehand in carefully dug, evenly spaced holes in the ground. Lewandowski said community efforts like these sustain parks around Queens.
“Our parks thrive because of the vital communities” surrounding them, Lewandowski said. “I really count on the good citizens of Middle Village to be our eyes and ears and help us keep Juniper Valley Park in the good state it's in.”
She said an active police investigation to find the person or persons responsible for the September arborcide is ongoing.
For people with normal-sized egos, the good deed alone is its own reward.
