Nearly seven months after a wetlands-themed playground opened at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village, the city’s Parks Department unveiled plans for the park’s $750,000 phase two remodeling.

The work will be in keeping with phase one’s design scheme and the park’s original topography - it was a swamp that was dried out around 1915 - but in a variation the playground will be restricted to 5-12 year olds.

Plans for the remodeled playground, located at 74th Street and Juniper Valley Boulevard, include a spray shower, swings, a seating area and accessible water fountains. There will be two shaded slides and a stone basin located next to the playground that will help with water drainage.

Winding paths will connect the playground to the rest of the park, while the same plant life used in the toddler’s playground will be reused. The seating area around the playground will be downsized.

“The overall total number of benches will be lower because some of the remodeling will leave us with less room,” said Lee Anne Beauchamp, the landscape architect who designed the park, adding that the problem will be addressed in the third and final remodeling phase.

Funding for the next phase has been hard to come by, according to Beauchamp. “We currently don’t have the funding to complete all the work we have planned,” she said.

“We will be seeking money for the next phase,” said Joanne Amagrande, the Queens Borough chief of staff for the Parks Department. “We will have our budget together by the end of the month and that will give us an idea of how much money we need for the next phase.”

Before work can begin on the second phase, however, the plans must be approved by the Parks Department. A decision is expected by November 15.

Parks official Joanne Amagrande presented plans for the phase-two remodeling of a playground at Juniper Valley Park.
