It’s not as if there aren’t already established optical businesses in Forest Hills. Kaleena Ma realizes this, but her family’s 30 years in the business and 7 optical stores also mean she knows all the tricks of the trade. MK Vision Center, which opened two months ago, is Ma’s own joint venture right in the heart of Forest Hills, on busy Continental Avenue.

“What sets us apart from other optical stores is we’re not just here to sell,” said Ma. “We’re here to build lasting relationships with our customers so they will trust us in giving them the best clarity.”

In addition to a vast selection of eyewear, MK Vision Center distinguishes itself through its non-profit involvement. Ma mentioned customers are invited to “share their vision for the world or themselves” on the company’s charity website (urvisions.com) and vote on a reputable charity that a portion of proceeds should be donated to.

In all the stores, used glasses are collected for donation to New Jersey-based organization New Eyes for the Needy. MK Vision Center is also in the process of arranging free vision screenings at local public and private schools.

Ma hopes the store’s convenient location and vicinity to bus stops and train stations will encourage people to stop in and take advantage of all the services offered, which include eye exams, contact lens fittings, adjustments, eyewear consulting and a licensed onsite optometrist and optician. All major insurances are accepted.

“We want to be a one-stop shop for all your visual needs,” she said, pointing out MK Vision Center offers everything from inexpensive to high-end eyewear brands, as well as an extensive children’s selection. (Ma authored a children’s book called Glasses For Me? Oh No!, available for sale at select stores)

She added MK Vision Center is the only optical store in Forest Hills with a second-floor V.I.P. room that houses luxury eyewear. Customers are invited to sit down and talk to eyewear consultants in a more relaxed environment.

Ma pointed out the other six optical stores, operated under different names and located in Chinatown, Brooklyn and Flushing, have experienced tremendous success within the Asian community, but Ma saw an opportunity to expand to an area with even more diversity.

“It’s important to recognize we’re becoming a more global society,” she said. “We’re trying to learn from different people and see what their visual needs are to service them. Forest Hills has a lot of potential.”

MK Vision Center is located at 107-29 71st Avenue in Forest Hills. For more information call 718-575-8288 or visit www.mkvisioncenter.com.

You can't build a long lasting relationship with clients if you end up ripping them off.
