Many of the baskets up for bid were donated by members of the community and featured everything from toys and electronics to wine glasses and Christmas decorations.
“All of the items here are purchased through the Kiwanis club or donated,” said club board member Michael Serao, who chaired the auction. “And all the money raised tonight goes back into the club and the various community groups that we support.”
With free admission and finger foods, it was no surprise that there was a packed house, attracting even folks from outside the neighborhood.
“It’s a good and festive event,” said George Reis, a member of the Glendale Kiwanis Club. “They raise money here and then give it out to the community. That’s what Kiwanis is all about, no matter what club your in.”
Members of the Middle Village Kiwanis Club also attended the event, as well as former City Council speaker Peter Vallone, Sr. and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas, who offered up her scarf for auction.
“This is an important event because it supports an organization that supports a lot of other organizations,” said George Stamatiades, president of the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition. “How can you turn down somebody that supports other people?”
