In a shopping center on McGuinness Boulevard in Greenpoint, you might have noticed that “L” is for laundromat and “M” is for new management.

Brooklynites Laundromat recently took over previous ownership of Sunrise Laundromat, with a few new adjustments to the old facility.

“Let's try to make a goal out of this instead of shutting it down” said Brandon Hoffman, the owner of the laundromat, who took over operations in July with his brother, Dave.

A resident of Greenpoint, Hoffman said updating the establishment was not easy.

“We brought in new laundry equipment, cleaned out the dryer's ventilation system, and added a heating and cooling unit,” he said.

He also added that a security system was installed so that customers could feel safe and hours could be extended.

Hoffman emphasized the importance of being environmentally friendly at their facility, working in conjunction with Clean Green Cleaners, a dry cleaner and laundry store that exclusively uses all-natural, organic products.

Instead of using petrochemical solvents, a potentially harmful substance traditionally used for dry cleaning, Brandon said liquid silicone, an odorless and colorless solution, is used to restore fabrics.

Hoffman also said that free Tide pods were available every Wednesday at the store, which are significantly smaller than traditional detergents and use less energy for shipping.

Holding on to a bit of the past, Hoffman hired the original staff from previous ownership. “They're great, and it'd be foolish of me not to,” he said of the mother and daughter duo who previously worked at Sunrise and now work at the new facility.

In a typical day at Brooklynites, whether it's free Wi-Fi or a wash-dry-fold service, Brandon can't average how many customers come in—he just knows they seem to enjoy doing their laundry.

Katie Karfinski, a local resident who lives in walking distance of the laundromat, said she has been coming to the establishment more under the new management. “They have extended hours and it's very nice,” Karfinski said.

With lots of bikers in the area, Hoffman said his next goal is to add a bike rack to the front of the laundromat. Until then, he feels satisfied.

“We're the nicest looking laundromat around,” he said.
