I read the letter that Ed Konecnik (“Guns & Ignorance” - March 22) wrote, and I just shook my head. But I submit that the reactions of schools to students walking out of class for 17 minutes was varied.
And if what Mr. Konecnik said is true, then there would have been 100 percent support for what these students did. But, sadly, that was not the case, which renders much of what he claims is happening to be untrue.
In fact, students exercising their First Amendment rights were a cause to be threatened with consequences from detention to being suspended in some schools throughout the country. It is laughable that Mr. Konecnik thinks the cause of school violence is the "progressivism" of education.
Time and thought will progress, always. That is fact as shown throughout history. Guns have become more lethal due to technology - progress through industry. Things progress.
So in order to decrease violence with guns is to have real reform though legislation. It is not education's fault, but views like Mr. Konecnik are not helpful and, in a way, harmful.
