Few things embody the Brooklyn culinary landscape better than the elevated lowbrow dessert. One would be hard-pressed to walk a Williamsburg or Greenpoint block without being lured by a fancy doughnut or artisanal ice cream.

However as a new Brooklyn chef a few years ago, Marisa Wu realized one confection was visibly missing from the borough’s plethora of boutique dessert offerings.

“I realized that no one in New York City was doing saltwater taffy,” she said. “There was no boutique saltwater taffy in the U.S. at all, so I started messing around with it.”

Wu began testing out different techniques and ingredients, using premium ingredients such as bergamot and real vanilla bean.

“It started tasting amazing,” she said.

The Salty Road was soon born. The company first operated out of Sunset Park and bounced around a few different locations before ultimately settling on Grand Street across from the Navy Yard last February, primarily with the help of funds from a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $25,000.

Today Wu churns out batches of taffy n imaginative flavors like eggnog and salted mango lassi that she sends to wholesalers.

Although the Salty Road doesn’t have a dedicated retail space all its own yet, Wu is looking at locations in Williamsburg and Greenpoint to potentially open a pop-up this summer.

“We’re just trying to find the right location,” she said. “We’re really excited about that possibility.”
