Geroge Gibbons, 37, flew from the back seat into the cab driver's lap after the the Lincoln Town Car was struck by a Chrysler Sebring traveling the wrong way on 58th Road.
“The driver was hysterical,” said a nearby resident who heard the 6:30 a.m. crash and ran to the scene. “He was all bloody and he was screaming. I think he knew the man was dead.”
Gibbons, as well as the unidentified 59-year-old cabbie, were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center. The driver was in stable condition; Gibbons was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to witnesses, two men were seen running from the scene, but one returned to receive treatment for a large gash on his head. He was identified as 44-year-old Andre McKanney of Jamaica, Queens. He was charged with possession of marijuana.
The driver of the vehicle remains on the loose.
According to published reports, the car is registered to Angela Kosoi, 42, of Brooklyn, who said she lent the car to a friend Friday for a job interview.
Gibbons is the owner of the popular bar, The Gibbons' Home, on 69th Street in Maspeth. He was on his way from work to his nearby home on 60th Drive when the accident occurred.
