A 41-year-old man is in critical condition after he lunged at officers with a knife at a home in Maspeth last Friday, forcing officers to shoot and tase him.

NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said the 104th Precinct received a call that a man at 54-55 64th Street was hallucinating, armed with a knife and destroying the basement of his family’s home.

“There was stuff thrown around,” Monahan said. “A banister was knocked off.”

When officers arrived they spent ten minutes talking to the man, trying to convince him to go to the hospital.

“He abruptly pulled out a large knife and yelled, ‘I’m not going back to the hospital,’” Monahan said.

The man lunged at them, causing one officer to strike the man with a taser and another to shoot him twice.

That same morning, different officers from the 104th Precinct responded to another call for the same man at the same address. It that incident he was taken to the hospital by ambulance, also because he was suffering from crystal meth-induced hallucinations.

The man also went to the hospital on January 6, making it three times in one week.

The officer who fired on the man had previous contact with the suspect, according to Monahan.

Body cameras for the officers were worn during the investigation and the footage will be investigated.
