Dear Editor,

The Gray Panthers NYC Network is outraged at the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The continued stealing of innocent lives as a result of overzealous policing is rooted in political and social systems that too often devalue the lives and bodies of people of color.

The Gray Panthers stands in solidarity with those working to peacefully address systemic racism and with those affirming the simple truth: #BlackLivesMatter.

Gray Panthers NYC Network is also outraged at the attacks on police officers in Dallas, and with the deaths of five heroic officers: Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Brent Thompson, Lorne Ahrens, and Michael Smith.

The road to fixing systemic injustice must be a peaceful one. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, "hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." We are heartened to hear stories of protestors and police working together to locate and stop those who perpetrated the carnage.

We join in mourning these recent victims of violence, and we continue to work with those seeking to right wrongs with peace, love, and a faith that our future can be better than our past.

Sincerely,

Gray Panthers

NYC Network
