I hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving. I hope that it is a beautiful, warm, sunny day as it was last year.

As we sit down with our families to enjoy their loving company and good food, be thankful that we live here in the USA, the greatest most generous country in the world. Our USA is a land blessed with plenty which we share willingly.

I’ve always loved Woodhaven as all that live here do, and it is because of the people, residents, and storeowners. This is exemplified by our strong work ethic and good character. We enjoy all of what Woodhaven offers; our Forest Park where we have a wonderful dog run, running trails, horseback riding, ballfields, playgrounds (one playground named after the first president of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and former president of the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association, Mary Whalen), our beautiful Seuffert Bandshell, our Victory Field, our running track (named after Frederick Schmidt, our former assemblyman), and last but not least our Forest Park Carousel, the Jewel of Forest Park, which now has its crown: landmarking.

Our Woodhaven also has the most vibrant commercial strips in Community Board 9. This being in great part because of our Woodhaven Business Improvement District, the only BID in CB9 and the only one in South Queens other than three in Jamaica. We have the longest BID - 25 blocks - with the lowest budget in New York City.

During the last 20 years, the WBID and the GWDC have received 35 awards, and I personally have received over 80 from community organizations and elected officials. Also the WBID was recognized as the “Best BID in NYC” where we are “Taking Care of BIDness”

The collapsed building at 78-19 Jamaica Avenue finally has the lights under the scaffolding surrounding the building turned on. There still has been no attempt to repair or reconstruct this collapsed building. The Woodhaven Business Improvement District and the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation still are calling for the condemnation and demolition of this building.

Don't accept being battered, call Queens District Attorney Richard Brown at (718) 286-6550 or the Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-621-HOPE (4673).

Please re-register for the basic STAR Program before Dec. 31, 2013. Please call (518) 457-2036 for more information. Our telephone number for the GWDC is (718) 805-0202 and the WBID number is (718)805-0760.

Now our WBID is completing the holiday lights on our Forest Parkway Plaza area, with many twinkling lights and on our beautiful Christmas tree. Our holiday lights along our Woodhaven's Jamaica Avenue are lighted and festive. Soon holiday music will fill the air from Dexter Court to 100th Street.

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday. Please shop locally and give support to those small stores that are so generous and support us by contributing to our WBID for your family's enjoyment. Let's make every Saturday and every day a Small Business Day.

Now mark your calendars! Our WBID-sponsored Holidays in Woodhaven Weekend will arrive on Friday, December 6, at 6:30 p.m. with the Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony in Forest Parkway Plaza. On Saturday, December 7, the "Welcome Santa to Woodhaven" Parade will kick off at noon at 100th Street marching down Jamaica Avenue to Dexter Court, where Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet the young children and those young at heart.

Also, after this weekend, the Woodhaven Business Improvement District will take free pictures with Santa Claus and friends at our Forest Parkway Plaza area on Saturday, December 14, and December 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. (weather permitting). Next week some suggestions for Woodhaven memory gifts.

This Thursday, when you sit at your Thanksgiving table, task that God bless our veterans who have preserved our freedom, and may God bless our armed forces who perpetuate our freedom. Also, in their honor fly our American flag proudly above all others. May God bless our America.
