The 104th Precinct Community Council is hosting National Night Out Against Crime this week at Joseph Mafera Park, located at 65th Place and Catalpa Avenue, from 5 to 9 p.m.

In an effort to build stronger ties between the community and police, the annual event brings out dozens of community vendors, offers health screenings and public safety information, rides for the kids and even a dunk tank for one lucky police officer.

“There will also be sign-up tables for auxiliary police,” said Officer Otoniel Jimenez.

Officers will be registering cell phones and bicycles to help cut down on theft, while the Glendale Kiwanis Club will be on the barbecue.

“It’s going to be a big night, and from what I’m hearing we have more and more companies than ever before looking to get involved and sponsor,” Manson said. “It’s been big in the past, but again more companies want to donate their time.”

Chris Landano has volunteered with the 104th Community Council since 1997, and said this year is going to be bigger than ever before.

“We go out to a lot of businesses in the neighborhood to see who can share anything with helping crime prevention,” Landano explained.

He added that with the rides, DJs and entertainment, it should be a night the whole family can enjoy.

“One great thing about this event is that it really shows the community there are some great resources from some great organizations,” Landano explained. “It’s all around great for the community.”
