Neil Edward O’Neill, 70, died at his home in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, on February 14, 2012.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Ignatius Martyr Church in Long Beach (721 West Broadway) on the morning of Saturday, March 24, 2012, commencing at 10:00 am. (516) 432-0045.

Mr. O’Neill was born February 15, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to the late George and Marian Jacobson O’Neill. O'Neill was raised in Maspeth, where he lived most of his young adult life. A great many will no doubt recall what a tremendous athlete O'Neill was, one of the area's top prospects in both baseball and basketball. In later years, he was an avid and accomplished golfer. O'Neill was a graduate of NYU, a retired New York City firefighter, a veteran of the armed forces, and proud to be an American. Above all, he was a sweet and gentle husband and father.

Survivors are his wife Michelle Cooper-O’Neill; daughter Anne Marie O’Neill of New York; son Neil O'Neill, Jr. of Maspeth and step-son William DeRosa (Samantha) of North Carolina; brothers George O’Neill of Maspeth, Richard O’Neill of Florida, James O’Neill of Florida; and granddaughter Josephine Michelle.
