Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that further budget cuts might be necessary. The problem is that these cuts could extend to the NYPD and the FDNY, which means layoffs and the closing of more firehouses. Police Commissioner Ray kelly has raised the possibility within the NYPD, and has already reduced the department’s headcount by about a thousand officers and delayed the next Police Academy class.
Meanwhile, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta has already canceled the FDNY’s next class of probationary firefighters. Earlier this week he said,” everything is on the table,” after Mayor Bloomberg ordered all city agencies to cut spending by an additional seven percent. These people represent essential services that protect its’ citizens from harm. My question for the Mayor is, have we not learned anything from the 9/11 attacks? The recent attack on Mumbai, India reinforces that point that the terrorists are still out there seeking to harm innocent people.
Another thing to remember is that crime goes up in a recession, and tourists stay away when crime goes up. PBA President said,”
Please Mr. Mayor, do the right thing. the safety and prosperity of all the city’s citizens are at stake.
