The Department Of Transportation's plan to convert some Maspeth two-way streets to one way is long over due.
So many streets in the neighborhood are too narrow for two-way traffic. These same streets have a high incidence of accidents, many of which go unreported.
There are streets where two cars can barely pass safely, and if a truck or a bus is coming you have to pull over somewhere to let them pass.
A one-way street also gives a driver extra time to react if a pedestrian or a child darts into the street, as well as gives room to pass a bicyclist safely.
Look at the one-way streets we have today. Years ago, they were two way, can you imagine them being two way again? They were converted for a reason: safety.
Yes, it is an inconvenience for some, but safety should come first. If you are afraid cars will speed, speed bumps could be the answer.
As a lifelong resident of Maspeth and a driver for over 50 years, I feel safer driving around Manhattan than on the side streets of Maspeth.
