Dear Editor,

As President of Allied Personnel Services Inc., a staffing firm, I strongly agree with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Mayor Michael Bloomberg's position against legislation requiring all businesses to provide paid sick leave for their employees.

I applaud the speaker for taking action to help the weakened economy that has greatly affected employers like me across the country. This bill would have had a negative influence on my small,

independently owned business by mandating that we provide an expensive benefit that we are not able to afford.

For Small business owners, our collective focus is to survive and then have the ability to grow our enterprises and thus create jobs for the unemployed. An onerous additional expense like this, at a time when banks are not even extending credit, would likely spell the end of many of us including my twelve-year old business.

This statement is not an exaggeration, as we are in the staffing industry. This type of expense

cannot be passed on to our clients. Many of them are small struggling businesses themselves.

Will being unemployed be a better scenario for workers that currently don't have paid sick days? The answer is obvious. Thankfully common sense has prevailed and I applaud Quinn for focusing on the big picture.

When the urgent need is job creation, piling on additional expenses and regulations hurts many more people than it would help. Businesses must be allowed the freedom to decide if and when they

provide such benefits.

The paid sick leave legislation would result in further economic and financial instability for my business and is a step in the wrong direction for our city.

Additionally, for similar legislative action in the future, the definitions of "small business" should

not be based on the number of employees but on the annual revenue of a corporation.

Sincerely,

Amparo Connors

President, Allied Personnel Services
